Canon 18-135mm Hood Mount Solar Film Adapter
thingiverse
I'm preparing my Canon 70D camera for the August 21st Solar Eclipse by designing a custom solar film adapter for its 18-135mm STM lens. I'd like to thank two talented designers on Thingiverse for inspiring my project: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:448437 and https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2376354. This design is more complex than necessary, but it's been a great opportunity to hone my skills with Fusion 360 and have fun while doing it. The adapter utilizes the hood mounting flanges and friction fits to securely hold the solar film in place, making it easy to attach and detach with one hand. Unfortunately, my novice skills with Fusion 360 resulted in errors in the STL file generated for the main body. Thankfully, makeprintable.com was able to correct these issues perfectly! I've included a video of my project: https://youtu.be/LA4D6swskkc. Update: I've uploaded the four Fusion 360 design files so that others can modify them as needed. For example, you could adjust the clips and front cover for thicker filter films or plates. Update 2: After recovering my lost solar film, I spent time on August 20th fine-tuning my settings for the upcoming eclipse. I've added new pictures and was even able to capture some stunning sun spots at ISO 100, f/32, and 1.3s.
