A cannon, derived from various languages with meanings of tube, cane, or reed, is an artillery piece powered by gunpowder or explosive-based propellants to launch projectiles. Varying in calibre, range, mobility, rate of fire, and angle of fire, cannons are designed with differing combinations of attributes for battlefield use. In the modern era, "cannon" has largely been replaced by terms like "guns," "artillery," or more specific ones such as "mortar" or "howitzer"; however, in aerial warfare, it is often used to refer to autocannons.
