Canelo/Winter's bark pollen

Pollen from Canelo/Winter's Bark (Drimys winteri) takes on a distinctive tetrad form - four individual grains merged in a rough pyramid shape. These specimens have undergone significant squashing over time. Native to the temperate rainforests of Chile and Argentina, Drimys winteri has been utilized for centuries to prevent sailors from contracting scurvy. Detailed technical specifications of Drimys pollen are documented by PalDat (Halbritter, 2016): medium-sized, heteropolar, tetrahedral tetrads consisting of oblate monads that display ulcerate surfaces with a reticulate exine pattern.
