Candidate ExoMars Landing Site in Mawrth Vallis
sketchfab
Mawrth Vallis is one of three prime landing sites being intensively studied for the ExoMars 2020 mission. The region surrounding Mawrth Vallis boasts an enormous exposure of phyllosilicates (clay minerals produced by intense chemical weathering) detected on Mars, making it a remarkable site to assess aqueous activity on early Mars and hint at the possibility that habitable environments may have thrived during the Noachian period, spanning from the formation of the planet to approximately 3.6 billion years ago. Other deposits and outcrops in the region display the highest degree of mineral alteration identified so far on Mars. https://www.uahirise.org/ESP_046103_2030 Image credit: NASA/JPL/University of Arizona
