Pistons in internal combustion engines rely heavily on the camshaft to control poppet valves. This critical component consists of a long cylindrical rod that spans the length of the cylinder bank, featuring multiple oblong lobes protruding from its surface - one lobe for each valve present. As the camshaft rotates, it forces open the valves by pressing directly onto them or an intermediate mechanism, effectively regulating airflow in and out of the engine cylinders.
