Remote camping or boondocking is great but the whole toilet situation is a bit of a hassle, especially for the girls. You can buy camping toilets where your raw sewerage is collected in a container at the bottom but its stinky and requires some rather unsavoury cleaning to keep it operational. These toilets also fill up very quickly as all the waste is collected. I figure that liquid waste doesn't need to be collected in the sticks, ask any man, we're just happy with a tree. This is a very common composting toilet concept, they are well blogged about, tested and many people use them full time. The challenge was to built it in such a way that it would be easy to transport, setup and pack up and deal with the minimum amount of the yucky stuff. This has been tested and it got the thumbs up from the wife, it doesn't smell at all and is very convenient. Best of all, using 2 plastic bags you can ensure that anything which is put below the hole in the toilet seat can only contact the inside of plastic bags, so you just tie it all up and nothing else to clean. Just throw the bag in the rubbish and your good to go. For those unfamiliar with a composting toilet, your liquids are diverted away from the solids, in this case run off a couple of meters from the tent. If you have a close water source, we flush it each time, which not only cleans and prevents smelling but improves the bioavailability for plants. If water is an issue, you can just use a spray bottle with vinegar and water, maybe some essential oil and spray the urine diverter to prevent smelling. The solids are received in the bucket below, which is lined with a bag, and you use wood shavings, peat, coconut husks or whatever you have available to cover up your business. This also assists the breakdown process and reduces the smell. For what smells do arise, these are sucked out of the tent using a 40mm fan, I connected this to a USB power bank via USB 12v buck converter which I found on ebay for about $10. As for the toilet base, this is a kookaburra bush dunny, it folds down flat for transport and makes a very sturdy toilet base. You will need to use a hole saw to drill 2 holes in the toilet, 1 for the exhaust and the other for the liquids hose. you just need an additional 13mm diameter hose to divert the urine to a suitable location, and a 40mm hose for the air extraction.
