Campbell Gas Engine

The Campbell Gas Engine Company of Kingston in Halifax manufactured this machine, which originally belonged to the Advent City mine's power station on Svalbard. The mine operated for only four years, between 1904 and 1908. Although most parts of the small settlement were repurposed elsewhere, the power station itself remained intact, gradually deteriorating on the Arctic Sea's beach. This machine was likely never installed at the power plant; instead, it probably served as a spare part. Besides this engine, other spare parts are scattered across the beach, many still packaged in crates that sailed from England over a century ago.
