Field Water Purifier This cool little device is a lifesaver in the field. In a pinch, with only a fire or heat source, an aluminum can or two, and a piece of cloth or paper, this device will keep you alive. Being stranded in a vehicle, stuck in an emergency situation, or living in an area where safe, clean water isn't available can become life-threatening very quickly. With this filter, a scrap of cloth, aluminum can, and a heat source, you can avoid finding yourself in such a situation. Although this device is manufactured using high-tech CAD machines, it's simple to use and easy to understand, two very important factors when you're in a situation where you may not be able to think clearly but have to act quickly. To get safe drinking water, first start a fire. Next, if you only have one aluminum can, you'll be using the funnel top strainer; if you have two, use the can attachment and fill up one can from your questionable water supply. As per the diagram, paper or cloth can be used as a filter for the upper and lower chambers. Place one piece of cloth over each of the filters' strainers as per the diagram. Next, use a piece of paper or cloth to cover the top and bottom portions of the two filters, as shown in the diagram. Then, fill the top filter with sand or dirt depending on what you have available. Grind a piece of charcoal from your fire into fine dust; the finer it is, the better. Put it in the lower filter. Screw the two filters together and snap in the can that will be the bottom to the lower filter. If you're using two cans, fill the other can with water from your questionable water supply, turn it upside down, snapping it into place on the upper filter, which contains the sand/dirt, and let it drain through. If you're only using one can, put water directly into the funnel. As the water drains through the filter into the lower can, it will be cleaned of debris and some bacteria. The next step is simply to remove your lower can once the water has finished draining through and place it next to the fire, preferably over it. The amazing evaporative process of water will keep the can from melting so long as there's even a few drops of water in it. As soon as that water begins to boil, wait for 60 seconds then remove the can from the fire and wait for it to cool. Once cool, you have safe drinking water and can focus on other needs.
