Camillo Paolo Filippo Giulio Benso, Count of Cavour, of Isolabella and Leri, born August 10, 1810, died June 6, 1861, was a renowned Italian statesman and leading figure in the movement toward Italian unification. He founded the original Liberal Party and served as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, maintaining this position throughout the Second Italian War of Independence and Garibaldi's campaigns to unite Italy. Following the declaration of a united Kingdom of Italy, Cavour took office as the first Prime Minister of Italy; however, he died after only three months in office, thus not living to see Venetia or Rome added to the new Italian nation. Cavour implemented several economic reforms in his native region of Piedmont during his early years and founded the political newspaper Il Risorgimento. After being elected to the Chamber of Deputies, he rapidly rose through the ranks of the Piedmontese government, eventually dominating the Chamber of Deputies by uniting left-center and right-center politicians. Following a significant expansion of the rail system, Cavour became prime minister in 1852. As prime minister, Cavour successfully navigated Piedmont through the Crimean War, the Second Italian War of Independence, and Garibaldi's expeditions, skillfully maneuvering Piedmont diplomatically to become a new great power in Europe, controlling a nearly united Italy that was five times larger than Piedmont had been before he came to power.
