Cambuskenneth Abbey

Cambuskenneth Abbey

sketchfab

A digital 3D reconstruction model depicts Cambuskenneth Abbey in Stirling, Scotland, showcasing what it might have looked like after an attack by King Richard II's army in 1383. The abbey features a freestanding bell tower, a rare sight in Scotland, which likely survived the destruction due to its use as a watchtower. This tower is the only part of the original church still standing today. It's possible that the exterior masonry had a more vibrant appearance with lime-washed rendering than shown here. Decorative elements may have been painted onto the masonry, but finding evidence of such designs in pre-reformation churches is challenging. The forms of the monastic buildings, including dormitories for monks, refectories, cloisters, and chapterhouses, are entirely speculative.
