Cambridge Z88 Card Slot Cover

Cambridge Z88 Card Slot Cover

thingiverse

A functional replacement for the card slot cover on the Cambridge Z88 computer - The iPAD of the 1980s. One of my Z88s was missing the card slot cover - you can't buy them anymore, so I made one. This design is pretty much an exact duplicate of the original one, and includes support for pushing the 'slot open' button hidden inside the case. I'd like to have been able to strengthen the hinge arms as they are only 1.2mm thick and prone to breaking under sideways loads or layer-separation if you put too much force on the hinge, but there wasn't any unused space in the case where I could make that happen.. Once the cover is installed into the machine it is held in place by the case, preventing sideways loads, but clicking the cover into place can easily lead to breakage. I printed this design from five different materials and had strong-ish prints with good layer adhesion in Black PETG and Magenta PLA. I tried clear PET but it had very poor layer adhesion. I bet this would print beautifully on a resin printer. For printing enable supports and use an 8mm brim for bed adhesion - the long thin shape makes this print want to curl up, so use whatever you normally use for extra adhesion. Fusion 360 always seems to export things the wrong way up. Rotate 180 degrees so that you're printing with the bottom facing down to minimize supports. I tried printing this using a variety of materials and had success with PLA and PETG.
