A cam is a rotating or sliding component that plays a crucial role in transforming rotary motion into linear motion, often forming part of a rotating wheel (like an eccentric wheel) or shaft (such as a cylinder with an irregular shape) that strikes a lever at multiple points on its circular path. The cam can be a straightforward tooth, used to deliver pulses of power to a steam hammer for instance, or an eccentric disc with an unusual shape that generates a smooth reciprocating motion in the follower, which is typically a lever making contact with the cam. A cam timer is also similar and were widely utilized in electric machine control before the advent of cost-effective electronics, microcontrollers, integrated circuits, programmable logic controllers and digital control.
