In Greek mythology, Calliope stands out as the muse who commands eloquence and epic poetry; her voice is renowned for its ecstatic harmony. Ovid refers to her as the "Chief of all Muses," a title she wears with distinction. One account claims that Calliope, the most exceptional among them, was intimately involved with Ares, the war god, and bore him several sons: Mygdon, Edonus, Biston, and Odomantus (or Odomas), who respectively founded Thracian tribes known as the Mygdones, Edones, Bistones, and Odomantes. Calliope also gave birth to two notable sons, Orpheus and Linus, by either Apollo or Oeagrus, the king of Thrace. She taught Orpheus verses for singing with precision. According to Hesiod, Calliope was not only wise but also assertive among her peers. Calliope married Oeagrus near Pimpleia, Olympus, and proved herself a formidable opponent by defeating the daughters of Pierus, king of Thessaly, in a singing competition. As punishment for their arrogance, she transformed them into magpies.
