Laurent Delvaux was a skilled Flemish sculptor born in Ghent in 1696 and passed away on February 24, 1778, in Nivelles. Following an illustrious international career that took him to London and Rome, he returned to the Austrian Netherlands where he held the position of court sculptor. Delvaux played a pivotal role as a transitional figure between the Baroque and Neo-classicism movements. Delvaux crafted a series of twelve impressive busts of Roman emperors in Brussels' Warandepark, which have been permanently displayed there since 1782. The sculptures are arranged around a fountain, each carved from white marble with their armor depicted in jasper-colored marble. Despite the faces being severely weathered, it is believed that one of these pieces represented Caligula.
