Caligula in Warandepark, Brussels
myminifactory
Laurent Delvaux was a renowned Flemish sculptor born in Ghent in 1696, whose international career took him to London and Rome before returning to the Austrian Netherlands, where he served as court sculptor. A pivotal figure bridging the Baroque and Neo-classicism periods, Delvaux's artistic legacy is marked by his mastery of detail and form. Delvaux crafted a striking series of twelve busts of Roman emperors in Brussels' Warandepark, which have been on permanent display since 1782. The sculptures are arranged around a fountain, each carved from white marble with armor rendered in jasper-colored marble. Although weathered to the point of near-unrecognizability, it is believed that one of these works depicts Hadrian.
