This device measures crabs accurately to ensure they meet California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations that require it when taking them. The five and three quarter inch gap between the larger section's sides is the minimum size for Dungeness crabs in California. The four inch gap between the smaller section's sides is the minimum size for all other California Cancer genus crabs, including yellow crabs, rock crabs, red crabs, and slender crabs. Two attachment holes are provided: one for a badge clip and the other for a carabiner or key ring.
