Cake Risers (Parametric)

Cake Risers (Parametric)

This parametric cake riser provides supports, to be embedded in tiered cakes, to ensure their stability - even when working with soft sponge cake. The provided STL files are sized for a three-tier cake, with tiers 218mm, 152.4mm and 101.6mm in diameter, each 125mm high. However, the supplied OpenSCAD file (which includes full instructions) makes it easy to generate risers for cakes of any size and any number of tiers.

Printing

Print as oriented (ie legs-up); no supports will be required. Prints easily in PLA.

Instructions

If your cake is the same size as ours, you can use the STLs provided. Otherwise, open cakeriser.scad in OpenSCAD.

Set the parameters for the size of the cake. The main parameters are:

cake_tallness: the tallness of the lower-layer cake

cake_diameter: the diameter of the cake being supported

pillar_diam: the diameter of the pillars which are sunk into the cake.

Save the file, render and generate the STL.

Repeat for each riser you need.

Once you have your STLs, print them and use them.

Example

We are making a wedding sponge cake. The bottom tier is 218mm diameter, the middle tier is 152.4mm, the top tier is 101.6mm. All of the tiers will be 125mm tall. We will print two risers:

the first with cake_diameter = 150, pillar_diam = 20

the second with cake_diameter = 100, pillar_diam = 15

Both have cake_tallness = 125. As it happens, these are the dimensions of the STLs provided.

The first (larger) riser gets sunk into the bottom tier, until its feet touch the cake board and its tray is flush with the top of the cake. The middle tier sits on this tray. The second (smaller) riser gets sunk into the middle tier, until its feet touch the tray of the first riser and its smaller tray is flush with the top of the middle cake. The top tier sits on this tray.

Ice over the whole cake - the risers will be invisible.

Using this approach, you can create cakes with arbitrary numbers of tiers, which are nice and stable even if made of soft sponge.
