The memorial was officially unveiled by Mayor Draper on Anzac Day, 1926. It cost £2,074 to complete, making it the most expensive 'digger' type memorial in Queensland and the third most costly First World War monument in the state. Residents of Queensland overwhelmingly preferred 'digger' memorials, with a total of 60 such figures erected across the region, nearly all manufactured locally. Among these monuments, the Cairns memorial stands out for featuring a 'digger' perched atop a clock tower - a unique design choice that serves two distinct purposes: it adds substantial size and visual interest to the monument, making it an unmistakable landmark; simultaneously fulfilling the long-held desire for a public timepiece in Cairns.
