The relief was brought into existence through the initiative of John Penn, the grandson of William Penn, who established Pennsylvania. In 1796, it was transported to Penn's Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire, where it remained until halfway through the last century, when it was relocated to the nearby Stoke Manor, a private estate. After construction work had been completed, the relief was moved with official permission and is now accessible to everyone.
