This is a marble sculpture portraying the moment Caesar invades Britain \r\nCaesar Invading Britain, carved by John Deare in Rome between 1791 and 1796, is signed 'I Deare Faciebat Romae 1796'. No other marbles by Deare can be found in British public collections\r\nJohn Deare's artistic reputation has been reevaluated in recent years. He should certainly be viewed alongside Thomas Banks and John Flaxman, with his exceptional technique surpassing both. Caesar Invading Britain showcases his remarkable skill and narrative expertise, earning it a place as one of his two major masterpieces, along with a large marble sculpture depicting the Judgement of Jupiter, now housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.\r\nThe sculpture was commissioned by John Penn, grandson of William Penn, Pennsylvania's founder. It was delivered to Penn's Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire in 1796 and remained there until mid-century when it was relocated to the adjacent Stoke Manor, a private residence. Following renovations, the sculpture was moved with Listed Building Consent and is now accessible to the general public.
