Castra Cecilia, also known as "Old Caceres", sits roughly 2.5 km northeast of the city of Caceres near the Torrejon el Rubio road in Republican-era territory dating back to around 78 BC; reportedly founded by Metellus Caecilio during the wars between Sertorius and Metelo, with Castra Cecilia meaning "of Caecilio". As a permanent Roman camp, it features a rectangular design situated on a small elevation of approximately 24 hectares along the Almonte river. The area housed up to 2 legions within its walls. Similar to all permanent camps, a defensive wall surrounded the camp with two layers measuring four meters wide in total. This outer wall is comprised of slate and quartzite masonry with an additional security system involving two excavated pits dug from slate that ride around the camp's perimeter.
