A simple ABS cable chain has space for 8 step motor cables; for a 300mm length, use 30 pieces. It's compact and requires a well-suited 3D printer with support for external parts. The cable is inserted from within. Version 1.0 is now available, with more testing ongoing. Upgrades include v1.1 (reduced friction) and a 22-piece plate, as well as v1.2 (almost no friction) and 4/26-piece plates.
