The San Francisco Municipal Railway operates the globe's last manually driven cable car system, which is a renowned symbol of the city. Established between 1873 and 1890, only three routes now remain: two from downtown Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf and one along California Street. Despite serving some commuters, the majority of the annual 7 million passengers are tourists who ride this historic mode of transport.
