The ancient Monument Q of Tres Zapotes is a significant archaeological site located on the eastern coast of Mexico's Oaxaca state. Situated roughly 60 kilometers southeast of the city of San Antonio Huitepec, this pre-Hispanic structure stands out as one of the earliest known examples of monumental architecture in Mesoamerica. Built around 900 BC during the Olmec civilization, the Monument Q is a massive stone statue carved from a single block of volcanic rock. It measures approximately five meters high and two meters wide, weighing an estimated 20 tons. The statue depicts a figure with a distinctive face, characterized by prominent facial features and a headdress that adds to its enigmatic presence. Despite being severely weathered due to exposure to the elements over thousands of years, the Monument Q still conveys a sense of awe-inspiring grandeur. Its sheer size and intricately carved design make it an important artifact for understanding the artistic and cultural expressions of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. The discovery of the Monument Q in 1945 marked a significant milestone in the field of archaeology, providing valuable insights into the lives and achievements of pre-Hispanic cultures. Today, this incredible structure is recognized as a national monument within Mexico and continues to captivate visitors with its mysterious allure. Interestingly, the name "Monument Q" was assigned due to the fact that it was discovered during the 1940s by archaeologist Matthew Stirling. The original site of discovery is often referred to as Tres Zapotes, which translates to "three little wells" in Spanish.
