The ancient complex was unearthed in 2015 by the Proyecto de Investigación Arqueológica Zaña (PIAZ), a team led by Dr. Kayeleigh Sharp of Southern Illinois University and Lic. Juan Martinez of Peru's Bruning Museum, Lambayeque. Funding for this excavation came from a substantial NSF doctoral dissertation research improvement grant.
