The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy serves as a massive military transport aircraft originally designed by Lockheed and is now maintained and upgraded by its successor, Lockheed Martin. This heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability enables the United States Air Force (USAF) to carry outsized loads, including all air-certifiable cargo. The Galaxy shares similarities with its smaller predecessor, the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter, as well as the later Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. Among the world's largest military aircraft, the C-5 holds a prominent position. The development of the C-5 Galaxy faced significant challenges, including substantial cost overruns that caused Lockheed financial difficulties. Shortly after entering service, cracks in many aircraft wings were discovered, restricting the fleet's capabilities until corrective work was completed. The C-5M Super Galaxy boasts upgraded engines and modernized avionics designed to extend its service life beyond 2040. The United States Air Force has operated the C-5 since 1969, using it to support military operations in major conflicts such as Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan, as well as allied support like Israel during the Yom Kippur War and Gulf War operations. The Galaxy has also played a crucial role in distributing humanitarian aid and disaster relief, and supporting the US Space Shuttle program.
