The Alenia C-27J Spartan is a cutting-edge military transport aircraft built by Leonardo's Aircraft Division, formerly known as Alenia Aermacchi until 2016. It's an advanced version of the earlier G.222 (C-27A Spartan in U.S. service), equipped with engines and systems also used on the larger Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. Besides the standard transport setup, specialized variants of the C-27J have been created for maritime patrol, search and rescue, command and control communications intelligence surveillance reconnaissance fire support electronic warfare, and ground attack missions. In 2007, the C-27J was chosen as the Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA) for the United States military; these aircraft were produced in an international partnership led by L-3 Communications. In 2012, the United States Air Force decided to retire the C-27J due to budget cuts after a short service life, but they were later reassigned to the U.S. Coast Guard and United States Special Operations Command. The C-27J has also been ordered by military air units of Australia Bulgaria Chad Italy Greece Kenya Lithuania Mexico Morocco Peru Romania Slovakia, and Zambia.
