A detailed model of the C-17 Globemaster III is provided, featuring an interior cargo area and complete texture sets. The C-17 Globemaster III is a strategic airlifter manufactured by Integrated Defense Systems and operated by the United States Air Force and the Royal Air Force. It has also been ordered for delivery in 2006 by the Royal Australian Air Force and the Canadian Forces, with plans to acquire it also being considered by the Royal Danish Air Force. On August 18, 2006, it was announced that suppliers are being told to stop work on parts for uncommitted C-17s, marking the first step in shutting down production if no new orders are received from the US Government. Current production of C-17 orders is expected to continue through the middle of 2009. In the 1970s, the USAF began searching for a replacement for the aging C-130 Hercules tactical airlifter. The Advanced Medium STOL Transport (AMST) competition was held, with Boeing proposing the YC-14 and Lockheed proposing the YC-15. Although both entrants exceeded specified requirements, the AMST competition was cancelled before a winner had been selected. By the early 1980s, the USAF found itself with a large but aging fleet of C-141 Starlifters, some of which were experiencing major structural problems due to heavy use. Compounding matters, the USAF historically lacked sufficient strategic airlift capabilities to meet its needs. In response, they elected to develop the YC-15 as the basis for a new aircraft, which was then designated the C-17A Globemaster III and ordered in August 1981. The new aircraft differed significantly from its predecessors, featuring swept wings, increased size, and a range of other improvements. The USAF has long recognized the importance of strategic airlift capabilities, and the development of the C-17 Globemaster III reflects this understanding.
