Bâton percé Magdalénien, Magdalenian pierced baton, shaft straightener. The simplest explanation for these antler artifacts is that they are straighteners for weapon shafts or antler points. They could of course be used to straighten other objects as well. Numerous other hypotheses for their use exist, for instance rope making tools, line anchors, fire making tools, etc (see review in Lucas et al, 2019, or experiments in Kilgore and Gonthier 2014). This one is generalized, not based on any particular example. Photographs of many examples can be seen on Don Hitchcock’s excellent website, Don’s maps (linked below). I am presenting these 3d models to everyone, free of charge. None of them were directly scanned from original (“real”) artifacts, but made off of copies which I have personally carved myself. Because of this, I own the rights to all of these; and I hereby give you free access to use them for whatever purposes you desire. If you do use these models or data derived from them in a publication, please thank me or provide a citation to this page; while the models are simple they represent a fair amount effort in research, carving, scanning, etc. Sources: https://donsmaps.com/batons2.html Lucas, Claire & Galway-Witham, Julia & Stringer, Christopher & Bello, Silvia.
