The Byzantine relief depicts figures of snakes intertwined with grapes. In this era of Byzantine sculpture, forms remained largely representational but were handled in an abstract style that hinted at a growing emphasis on symbolism over aesthetic and expressionistic qualities. This shift was partly driven by the influence of new theology and ecclesiastical power. The 2017 London Masterpiece Fair showcased this very sculpture.
