In 330 A.D., Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor of Rome, relocated the imperial capital from Rome to Byzantion, a strategic port city situated at the far eastern edge of Europe, where east-west trade routes converged. The emperor renamed this ancient city Constantinople, in tribute to himself, and it was also known as New Rome, reflecting its new status as the empire's central government seat. This Christian state, rooted in Greek culture, would come to be known as Byzantium by historians, but its medieval citizens proudly identified themselves as Rhomaioi, or Romans, and regarded themselves as heirs to the ancient Roman legacy.
