In 330 A.D., Constantine the Great, first Christian ruler of the Roman Empire (ruling from 306 to 337), moved the ancient imperial capital from Rome to Byzantion, a thriving port city located on the eastern edge of Europe at a crucial crossroads between east-west trade routes. The emperor renamed this historic city Constantinople, proudly claiming it as his own legacy; he also dubbed it "New Rome," acknowledging its new status as the Roman Empire's central hub of power. From this Greek-speaking Christian capital, the state would eventually be known as Byzantium by modern scholars, while medieval citizens referred to themselves as "Rhomaioi," Romans, and proudly regarded themselves as heirs to the ancient Roman legacy.
