The castle was built around 1330 by the Counts of Tiers. Starting from 1461, the city of Basel used the facility as a Landvogtei. During the chaos following the French Revolution, the already abandoned castle was looted and set on fire by an angry local population on the night of January 21-22, 1798. After that, the ruin served as a quarry and came into private ownership in 1864.
