A butterfly valve is a valve used to control or stop fluid flow in a pipe. It has a rotating disc inside that acts like a butterfly's wings. When the disc is turned a quarter turn, it allows flow. When perpendicular to the flow, it blocks it. They are good for quick on-off control and are relatively simple and inexpensive.
