A butterfly valve belongs to the quarter-turn valve category. It operates by entirely opening or closing when the metal disc, referred to as the 'butterfly', rotates 90 degrees on its rod. When closed, the disc blocks the passageway entirely; conversely, a quarter turn opens it for almost unrestricted fluid flow. Incremental rotation can also be used to regulate flow.
