The first concept of the Butterfly chair emerged in Buenos Aires, Argentina back in 1938 when Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan and Jorge Ferrari Hardoy brought their expertise together as part-time employees at Le Corbusier's Parisian design workshop. This group had established a renowned think tank called Grupo Austral prior to crafting this groundbreaking piece of furniture. The chair gained an alternate nickname, the BKF chair, because it reflects the surnames of its creators, while some official documents give credit for the primary design work to Ferrari-Hardoy, leading some to refer to it as the Hardoy chair. Initially built from just two curved tubular steel pieces and a single piece of leather attached in such a way that it looks like it's floating mid-air, the frame is always black while the material for the seat is a rich brown leather.
