This preserved cow scapula offers a glimpse into the daily lives and food sources of enslaved individuals at Mount Vernon. The bones found here are typically smaller and lower in quality than those discovered on the Washington estate, indicating that stews rather than roasted meats were a staple of the slave's diet. Recovered from archaeological excavations at the House for Families, George Washington's Mount Vernon, dating back to the 18th-19th centuries. This digital model was created using a NextEngine Desktop 3D scanner in the archaeology laboratory at George Washington's Mount Vernon. The description was written by Virginia Commonwealth University student Jessica Evans. A digital version of this model is provided courtesy of the Virtual Curation Laboratory and the Mount Vernon Ladies Association.
