Having performed with several traveling actor troupes, he discovered a theater in Kolozsvár where he could take center stage. After completing his artistic training in Vienna, he landed a leading role at the newly opened Hungarian National Theater in Pest by 1837. In 1848's tumultuous Hungarian Revolution, he was appointed a government commissioner to oversee operations in the lower-Tisza region, but was swiftly recalled for enforcing laws too strictly. Returning to the stage proved short-lived as he fled to Turkey after the Hungarian revolution's crushing defeat. Four years later, in 1854, he received permission to return home without facing punishment.
