Carved in the plinth just below the bust is this inscription: 'Virginia Woolf, born in 1882, lived until 1941.' On a steel plate attached to the lower part of the plinth reads: 'Virginia Woolf resided in a house originally located on the south side of Tavistock Square from 1924 to 1939 where most of her notable novels were written and published.' 'Then one day while walking around Tavistock Square, I conceived, as I sometimes create my books, To the Lighthouse; in a great, apparently involuntary, burst of creativity.' This memorial was dedicated by the Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain on June 26th, 2004.
