Bust of Trajan

The Emperor Trajan, reigning from 98 to 117 AD, is masterfully depicted in red porphyry, his head turned ever so slightly to the left in a captivating bust form. A majestic mantle, secured by a brooch on his left shoulder, flows over a cuirass adorned with a Medusa head at its center. Across his right shoulder rests a strap that ends dramatically in a lion mask. His upper arms are elegantly covered by short fringed sleeves, giving the impression of movement and fluidity. The entire bust is supported by a matching circular porphyry base, crafted with precision to complement the sculpture's grandeur. Despite being anonymous, this exquisite piece was likely created in Italy during the late 18th century, and may have originally been part of an impressive collection of Roman emperors.
