The sitter's relative by marriage was Henry Blundell of Ince, whose family collection received the bust. Displayed at the Royal Academy in 1803, it gained widespread attention. Nollekens masterfully conveys a striking likeness through exquisite facial modeling and sharply observed details such as his heavy eyebrows and wavy locks; he also achieves an elevated, classical tone thanks to the generalised draped cloth covering his shoulders.
