Francis Sylvester Mahony (December 31, 1804 – May 18, 1866) wrote as Father Prout, an accomplished Irish humorist and journalist by trade. Born in Cork, his native city, Mahoney is most celebrated for penning the poem "The Bells of Shandon," a work that has become synonymous with both the city and St. Ann's Church in Shandon.
