The bust of Pericles at The Louvre (scanned on Scan the World) bears striking similarities to The Pallas of Velletri, suggesting that both sculptures were crafted by the same skilled artist, Cresilas (or Kresilas; a conclusion shared by Hinks, Fittschen, Muss and Schubert, although Lippold casts doubt). The inscription on the bust's front reads ПЕРИКЛЕС in elegant lettering, translating to the name Pericles. This renowned leader was celebrated for his bravery as a warrior and his wisdom as a legislator, as depicted here with intricately carved facial hair (a trait seen in Trajanic and Antonine depictions of powerful men; see references 1 and 2) and a distinctive helmet. This Roman replica is likely a copy of an original portrait created during Pericles' lifetime or shortly after his passing. While it probably does not accurately represent Pericles' physical appearance, the bust showcases an idealized image of the mature soldier-citizen, proudly wearing a helmet pushed back on his head. This remarkable object is part of "Scan The World," a groundbreaking initiative launched by MyMiniFactory to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks and landmarks from around the globe for public access. Scan the World is an open-source community effort, where contributors can share their own interesting items; if you have something to contribute, email stw@myminifactory.com to learn how you can participate in this exciting project.
