"The struggle is my life" Nelson Mandela Imprisoned on August 5, 1962, sentenced to life in prison on June 12, 1964 for his actions against apartheid. Dedicated by the Greater London Council. Unveiled by Oliver Tambo, President of the African National Congress, on October 28, 1985. Nelson Mandela was released from prison after serving 27 years on February 11, 1990. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10, 1993. Installed as President of the Republic of South Africa and its Government of National Unity on May 10, 1994.
