Bust of Mary from Pietà in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican
myminifactory
This is a stunning marble bust from Michelangelo's masterpiece, Pietà. The Pietà is a revered subject in Christian art depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the lifeless body of Jesus, predominantly featured in sculpture. As such, it is a specific form of the Lamentation of Christ, a pivotal scene from the Passion of Christ found in cycles of the Life of Christ. When Christ and the Virgin are surrounded by other figures from the New Testament, the subject is strictly referred to as a Lamentation in English, although Pietà is often used for this as well, and is the standard term in Italian.
