This marble bust depicts Michelangelo's masterpiece, the Pietà. The Pietà is a recurring theme in Christian art that shows the Virgin Mary tenderly holding Jesus' lifeless body. Typically found in sculpture, it represents a specific form of the Lamentation of Christ, which is part of the Passion of Christ depicted throughout cycles of the Life of Christ. When Christ and the Virgin are surrounded by other figures from the New Testament, it's strictly called a Lamentation; however, Pietà is often used for this scene as well, being the standard term in Italian.
