Bust of "Marius" from the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. Gaius Marius was a renowned Roman general and statesman who served as consul an unprecedented seven times during his illustrious career. He implemented groundbreaking reforms that revolutionized Roman armies, allowing landless citizens to join the ranks, abolishing outdated military formations, and reorganizing legions into cohesive cohorts. By defeating the invading Germanic tribes (the Teutones, Ambrones, and Cimbri), Marius earned the distinction of being called "Rome's third founder." His life and achievements played a pivotal role in Rome's transformation from a Republic to an Empire. This object is part of the "Scan The World" initiative.
