Bust of Marcus Aurelius
myminifactory
This bust originates from the renowned Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius, housed at Rome's Capitoline Museums (Inv.MC3247). The head of the horse can be downloaded here. Many equestrian statues existed in ancient Rome during Marcus Aurelius' time of death. Late Imperial descriptions listed 22 such statues called equi magni, with sculptures of similar scale to this one. The statue of Marcus Aurelius is the only survivor, thanks to constant transfers between leaders until Pope Paul III ordered its move to the Capitoline Hill in 1538. A year later, the Roman Senate commissioned Michelangelo for a refurbishment. He not only planned an appropriate site but made it central to the magnificent architectural complex known as Piazza del Campidoglio.
