Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known by his alias Lenin, was a Russian revolutionary and politician who served as head of government from 1917 to 1924. He was the architect of Marxism-Leninism, which would shape Soviet policy for generations to come. A prolific writer and orator, Lenin drew upon Marxist theory to advocate for revolution across Russia. Born into a comfortable middle-class family in Simbirsk, Lenin developed an early passion for socialist politics following his brother's 1887 execution by the Russian Empire's Tsarist government. His participation in student protests against imperial rule landed him at Kazan Imperial University, but his time there was marked by repeated expulsion for sedition. The future revolutionary eventually settled on a law degree, however, and devoted himself to mastering its principles. Moving to Saint Petersburg in 1893, Lenin emerged as a key Marxist activist within the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). He married Nadezhda Krupskaya, who became his loyal companion for life. Arrested and exiled to Siberia in 1897 for sedition, Lenin leveraged his imprisonment to produce writings that further solidified his status as a leading Marxist thinker. Back on the loose, Lenin found himself increasingly radicalized by events unfolding within Russia. When Tsar Nicholas II's government clamped down on democratic rights following the January 1905 massacre, Lenin rallied to his people's cause and demanded a new European revolution, hoping it would bring swift overthrow of the imperial system. Following months of tension, Vladimir Ilyich was expelled once more for agitating within universities, but in March he moved rapidly onto an even greater campaign when he organized student marches throughout Moscow in support of striking textile workers. Within six weeks after these demonstrations had failed to deliver him desired revolutionary gains at home, he sailed from Europe to America aboard SS Columbia - which reached its final destination late summer; although nothing could stop Lenin then – for soon afterward American and European radicals would join his fight.
