Bust of John the Baptist
myminifactory
This bust originates from a full figure sculpture adorning the outside of the Opera Duomo in Florence, though another copy can be found at the Opera del Duomo Museum. Originally considered to be a work by Nanni di Bartolo by Horst Waldemar Janson (Janson 1957 II, 228-31, Figs. 482a-84d), Donatello's signature is featured on its base. The statue does not resemble earlier adaptations of Donatello's John the Baptist, who was often depicted as a skinny, dry old man dressed in animal skins.
